Folic Acid

Hello, My wife and I are 8 weeks into our pregnancy. We saw our Dr. for an altasound at 7 weeks, and he told us she should be taking 4 folic acid pills and on 1 prenatal vitamin a day. We are concerned that taking 4 folic acid pills a day, and 1 prenatal pill, is too much. What is the recomended dose for folic acid when you are pregnant with twins?

Thank you in advance.

Folic Acid response

I'm not sure how helpful this is to state an exact numbre of milligrams because I take the prescribed prenatal vitamin daily, plus an extra 400ml (over-the-counter) of folic acid due to Baby B being in there.
Ultimately, it's important to discuss this wiht the OB-GYN as different prescriptions may have different amounts, and too much of a good thing (folic acid) can then become a bad thing. Call the doctor.

Thank you for your advice. My wife and I went and saw our Dr. the other day, and he said taking the four folic acid and the one prenatal pill is fine. So now that we have figured out that concern, time to move onto another concern!

Once I found out it was twins, OB said to double up my dose of folic acid. Which is two pills a day, 1 milligram total. Hope this helps :)

Not sure...

I'm not really sure, except to tell you that my OB recommended that I take the usual 1 pre-natal vitamin per day along with some extra iron, as I had become a bit anemic due to the twin pregnancy. I have never heard of needing to take the extra folic acid, but I know it's an important element in pregnancy, so I'm sure your doc knows what he/she is doing.
