What Is Going On Here?

I remember feeling so excited, we are going to have a baby!! Okay, so at the 10 week check up the docotr asked if I was sure of my last period dates, and again at 14 weeks. What's going on here? The doctor then tells me that I am either having more than one or because I am only 5' tall I am showing a little bigger for my gestational time. So I pray that I am just short...First time in my life for that!

At 16 weeks the ultrasound showed 2 tiny heads that looked to be cuddling. I exclaimed "Oh my GOD!" and hubby started laughing, as if I am the only one going through this. He had no idea what it was like to have one baby, never mind two. He would learn through hands on experience.

From that point on my belly became the topic of a lot of conversations. There was a lot of "my stomach didn't get that big until such and such a month" "you can hardly fit through that doorway, definately wouldn't if you were going sideways".
I was amazed at how far my skin could stretch without having my insides explode, and how strange it was to feel the babies kicking etc. I began to feel like there was some kind of alien life in my belly. Did you ever think that you could feel a kick on your spine? VERY BIZZARE!

The pregnancy was not easy, I was exhausted a lot of the time. Then I developed toxemia and had protein in my urine, and man did I ever swell up! By the 31st week I couldn't get my normally size 5 feet into my husband's slippers. My wedding ring had long before gone on a chain around my neck.

At about the same time I was put on bed rest at my mom's for 2 weeks, then moved to the hospital as my blood pressure was still climbing and the protein kept creeping up. I remember having ultrasounds to the point that I wasn't even that thrilled to see the little munchkins on the screen anymore, I wanted them OUT!! However, maternal instincts told me to stay calm, do what I could to keep them in since that was the best place for them for a little while longer.

At 34 weeks the neonatologist said they babies were doing fine and the goal was to keep them in till 37 weeks. I wanted to slap him on the face! As if I had any real control over all of this! Then the nurse from the OB's office came in that night to tell me that my protein was too high for comfort and my doctor was on his way back early from his vacation to deliver my babies!

The next day at 8:20 and 8:21 a.m. we became the proud parents of two identical boys, weighing 5 lbs 2.2 oz, and 4 lbs 9.2 oz. They were healthy, although small, and we took them home 4 days later.
